Spain Jobs Crisis Worsens: Record Unemployment

April 25th, 2013 Comments off

The unemployment rate in the Eurozone’s  4th largest economy continues to soar, and has now reached 27.2 percent. After 5 years of unrelenting economic crisis, Spain’s deep depression shows no sign of ending. The IMF projects further contraction in the Spanish economy for 2013, with the unemployment rate expected to continue to rise.

The beleaguered Spanish Prime Minister,  Mariano Rajoy, has nothing to offer the six million plus unemployed Spaniards, except for more austerity measures, masquerading as “economic reforms.”  With the worst jobs crisis since the end of the Franco dictatorship, the political leadership in Spain is impotent, and unrest among the unemployed and disaffected is increasing, with calls for mass demonstrations opposing Madrid’s economic policies proliferating on social media.

With Spain’s economy in tatters, can democracy survive, or will the economic crisis  lead to calls for a “strong man” to rescue the millions of unemployed from the utter hopelessness now raging on the Iberian peninsula?

Unemployment Rate In Eurozone At Record Levels

January 15th, 2013 Comments off

Official statistics reveal that in November 2012 Eurozone unemployment levels reached  11.8 percent, compared with 10.6 percent in November 2011. This record level of joblessness in the 17 nation monetary union clearly shows that the massive, repetitive efforts at solving the Eurozone’s intractable sovereign debt crisis has worsened economic vitality, contributing directly to a worsening employment picture within the monetary union.

The unemployment rate revealed in official figures obfuscates the very uneven economic performance within the Eurozone, especially with respect to employment statistics. In Austria is found the lowest level of unemployment within the Eurozone, at 4.5 percent. In contrast, Spain now has the highest level of unemployment in the Eurozone, a staggering  26.6 percent, surpassing even insolvent Greece, which  had an unemployment rate of 26 percent.

It appears clear that the Eurozone is not a unified monolith, but a tale of two economic orders. There is the debt ridden, increasingly jobless periphery, and the still relatively prosperous core countries, such as Germany. The question is, how long can the core of the Eurozone remain immune to the depression-level economics within the PIIGS nations? My guess; if the insolvent Eurozone countries remain mired with high unemployment by mid-year, it is hard to see how jobless rates will not start to rise dramatically in the core of the Eurozone.

Spain’s Economic Crisis Has Gone Insane

July 12th, 2012 Comments off

The latest policymaking news from the Eurozone proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that clinical insanity is now the official economic and fiscal policy of this disastrous monetary union.

Spain’s insolvent banks were given a massive dose of bailout money from the taxpayers-primarily German- of the Eurozone. In exchange, the government of Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy, which has already imposed draconian spending cuts and tax increases on the population, had to commit to another65 billion euros in cuts and deficit reductions over the next two years, including an increase of three percent in the national value add tax. Now, Spain is already in the midst of a severe economic recession (really a depression) with 25 percent unemployment and sustained economic contraction. So, what is this additional austerity measure likely to do? Answer: further increase unemployment, facilitate demand destruction, in turn creating more economic contraction, resulting in lower government revenues. In other words, the fiscal deficit will continue. But don’t worry, the genius politicians in the Eurozone are already dusting off the next set of austerity measures for Spain.

Albert Einstein once defined insanity as doing the same thing and expecting a different result.  By that definition, the entire political class in the Eurozone is over-ripe for institutionalized commitment.
